As you will have seen on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, we had a pretty awesome week: gorgeous mountain weather with blue skies and little wind, barely any other tourists and a lovely apartment – all in a prime locations for people who love the outdoors.
Our getaway to Achensee last week was so perfect in every way that we were not only reluctant to leave, we actually added another day and only arrived back in Vienna yesterday. I guess that says it all.We had booked this holiday on pretty short notice due to the favourable weather forecast and weren’t disappointed.
We hadn’t at all been aware of the diversity of the area – it felt like the best bits of Madeira’s, Alto Adige’s and New Zealand’s mountainous regions thrown together.
Plus sunshine.
Amazing.
During the seven full days we spent at Achensee we completed three day-long alpine tours, one day walking around the lake and two shorter hikes to lower pastures.

On one day it was raining so we used it to stock up on groceries, read – and still fit in a leisurely walk in the afternoon.
Our tours, hikes and wanderings were as follows:
- Sunday: Hochiss
- Monday: Feilalm
- Tuesday: via ferrata Haidachstellwand
- Wednesday: home-day
- Thursday: around the lake
- Friday: Pasillalm
- Saturday: Falzthurnalm

In retrospect, this looks like a busy schedule but we only set an alarm twice (for Mr A to go paragliding and as not to miss check-out) and the whole week was utterly relaxing. In fact, I have never felt so totally relaxed after only one week of holidays.

Needless to say I will write in more detail about our walks; this post is merely to give you an overview and share a few photos with you.
