As the days are getting longer (3 more minutes of sunshine each day during February!), brighter and finally (!) slightly warmer, my gardener’s hands are itching to start planting things (anything really) again.
Therefore, next weekend I will start the outdoor season by sawing tomato, capsicum and chili seeds – derived from last year’s yield – as well as some spinach into little containers and put these behind the glass wall separating kitchen from balcony. This will guarantee them getting maximum sun (the balcony faces south) while being sheltered from the elements (i.e. inside). Continue reading Aliciouslife: My Balcony Garden – Plans for 2015
Coinciding with Valentine’s Day, the 3rd Viennese Vegan Ball was celebrated at Arcotel Kaiserwasser last night, hosted by the Vegan Society of Austria. It had actually been Mr A’s idea to attend, since I wouldn’t have brought it to his attention, and he invited me to go as a gift to my first vegan birthday.
Neither of us knew what to expect (since we don’t know any other vegans, nor people potentially interested in vegan balls) so we just dressed up and took the U-Bahn out to Kaisermühlen/ VIC. Continue reading Aliciouslyvegan: Vegan Ball
A couple of months ago there was a rumour that Schillinger, probably the most well-known vegan restaurant in the eastern part of Austria, was going to open a restaurant in Vienna. This rumour stuck around pretty persistently. Then the ads on Facebook started. More rumours that there it going to be an all-vegan burger joint. Finally a tentative opening date appeared: early January 2015.
And a name: Swing Kitchen. Continue reading Aliciouslyvegan: Schillinger’s Swing Kitchen
One of many great things of not being at work all day was that I got to try out some of the lunch-places I had been meaning to visit for a while. Even though a few of them were closed (looking at you here, Home Made and Nat’naa), many were not.
On one of my numerous strolls around the city I found myself steering towards Freshii, a small restaurant in the first district. All I knew was that it served salads, soups and wraps, with a fair chance of vegan fare. Continue reading Aliciouslyvegan: Freshii
Coming across a new venue that offers vegan brunch in a smoke free environment I will always be eager to give it a try. My latest find in this category is Green PS Cafe–Bar–Shop at Shinergy Zone in the 9th district and we went to their New Year’s brunch last Sunday. It was only the second time they actually offered brunch but the food had definitely been tried and tested before – because simply everything was delicious! Continue reading Aliciouslyvegan: Green PS Café-Bar-Shop
Oh, the lights. Each year I’m once more excited when the first Christmas lights are put up on Vienna’s shopping streets. Then the markets come up and I’m again mesmerised. Continue reading Aliciouslife: Christmas lights
Until my good friend Chicagogirl took me to my first yoga lesson, I had been ambivalent in regard to …well, what was that yoga anyways? Sitting still, breathing, making strange poses, incense sticks and esoteric chatter – neither of this sounded at all appealing to me. This, however, pretty much sums up my understanding in the time BY (before yoga). Continue reading Aliciouslife: Forrest Yoga
Every minute somewhere in Austria blood a (450ml) unit of stored blood is needed, however, hospitals are usually critically short on blood. Only 3.5% of the Austrian population regularly donate blood (source: Rotes Kreuz) which I think is frankly embarrassing as well as highly egotistic. Continue reading Aliciouslife: Give blood, save lives
The other Sunday, which was a SUNday indeed, Mr A and I revisited one of our favourite breakfast haunts in Vienna: Augustin.
From outside, it looks dark and unwelcoming and certainly not like a place I would voluntarily visit, even though they recently painted the door what I can only describe as “Augustin-mint”.
From the inside, however, it is absolutely lovely: upholstered chairs, an antique-y bar setting, dark wooden panelling, chandeliers and – for summer – a perfectly gorgeous courtyard. Continue reading Aliciouslyvegan: Breakfast at Augustin
