Of course you will not only need clothing and toiletries when you’re travelling. Actually, these are add-ons since there are a couple of items that are absolutely vital to your leaving your homegrounds and exploring the world beyond, most often these will include your credit card and often a passport. These are the things I have come to not leave at home ever:
The essential essentials
- Passport
- Wallet with all cards (ATM, credit card etc.) and cash
- Documents such as driver’s license, dive log etc
- Ear plugs
- Sleeping shades
- Sunglasses + container
- Glasses/ contact + everything you need for them
- Daypack (be that a backpack, a tote, messenger bag or purse – whichever you feel comfortable with)
Other essentials
- Smartphone + charger
- eReader + charger
- camera + charger (optional: spare SD card, lenses, battery)
- pens & paper (highlighter, sharpie, 2 blue pens)
- mp3-player
- tissues
Things I also like to bring
- post its/ Thank you-notes
- Cutlery including a sharp knife
- Peeler
- A little Tupperware container (for storing food on the go)
- A shopping bag that folds into a tissue-sized pillow
- Business cards
- Tea bags in a zip-lock bag
- Power bars
- Vegan chocolate
- Money belt
- Small Febreeze spray
- Sleep sheet or sleeping bag (usually not on city trips but definitely for anything that involves backpacking)
Bloggers may want to add:
- laptop, charger and extension cord
I have never brought my laptop along though. I’ll usually schedule posts in advance or simply go on holiday. My readers can do without my esteemed advice for a week or five and – depending of the wifi-situation – I will regularly post on Facebook and Instagram like I did during my recent visits to New York and Boston.
What do you think? Am I missing anything you couldn’t do without?
