The first time I went, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The second time, I still couldn’t believe it was true. Now that I’ve been numerous times – for both breakfast and dinner – since Ströck Feierabend opened in February, I still find it perplexing how smooth and friendly the service presents itself.
So far, every single waitress and waiter have been attentive and smiling, without being obtrusive. This is such a rarity in Vienna that I cannot rate it highly enough. Mr A and I will gladly make the trek along the U3 on Sundays to not only have a tasty and filling breakfast (you get that in other cafes – if not of the same quality…and vegan) but also to not have our weekend mood soured by unfriendly faces.
He is not a big eater so the Wiener Frühstück (Viennese breakfast) or Knuspriger Kornspitz mit Bio-Eierspeise, Tomaten und Schnittlauch (grain roll with scrambled organic eggs, tomatoes and chives) will do for him most days. I always order the vegan breakfast – whatever this means I’ll have on my plate, so far it’s all been delicious.
For dinner I’ll have the ratatouille which thankfully comes with bread, as otherwise it wouldn’t nearly fill me up. It tastes just the way I like it, very juicy-tomato-y with the vegetables cooked to the point.
Actually, the food there is so good that I wish there were more vegan dishes on the menu. But then, who knows what is going to happen come winter?
