For the better part of 2014 I have strictly followed a plant-based diet. Only recently did I come across an article of someone claiming that for whatever reason you became vegan in the first place, those who stick to it will increasingly see the political dimension. At first I thought “not me”, but when thinking about it I realized how spot-on he was.
I started out of curiosity, kept going because it seemed and still seems to me the healthiest way to eat – and by far the most sustainable. Only now will I find myself getting more and more concerned about how humans treat animals. While a few months ago, I wouldn’t have flinched had someone who eats meat called himself an animal friend, now I can only shake my head in disbelief of this person’s short sightedness and self-delusion.
Nowadays, I get increasingly angry with persons who simply do not want to know where their food comes from because “If I knew I wouldn’t want to eat it any more or at least feel very bad about it”. Not because I want to “turn” them – seriously, I’m not a vampire, nor a missionary of any kind – but because I think that everyone should be aware of the effect they have on the world. I simply cannot accept ignorance – especially when others have to suffer for it (be that mistreated animals or humans who suffer from the environmental impact the amount of animal products consumed has on our planet).
I would be so proud if you were to give it a try – one month only. Then recap on how your life has changed. I can’t wait to hear about your progress!
